MLA charged with inciting violence in Malda


MALDA, June 27: Malda police have registered cases against nine persons including the English Bazaar Congress MLA, Mr K N Choudhury on charges of instigating violence, damaging government property and an attempt to murder.Of the nine charged, the police have already arrested eight including the former Congress pradhan of Kazigram gram panchayat in English Bazaar police station under several sections of the IPC and non bail-able section of the Arms Act. The charges are linked with yesterday's clash between the Congress and CPI-M supporters over a controversy regarding the formation of the Kazigram gram panchayat board. At least 10 persons including media personnel and policemen were injured in the clash. According to the police, trouble broke out following certain allegations by the Congress MLA Mr K N Choudhury after the CPI won the Kazigram panchayat pradhan's post with help from the Congress outwitting the CPI-M. In addition to the above, the police have lodged further cases against six persons including the English Bazaar MLA on the basis of complaints lodged by the CPI-M. The Congress MLA Mr K N Choudhury alleged that the police including the Malda ASP had threatened him yesterday. Mr Choudhury was admitted to Malda district hospital and later shifted to a nursing home today. “He was not injured in yesterday’s clash,” said Mr S K Sarkar, ASP Malda, who was on the spot when the clash occurrered. n SNS
