Demonstration staged at Gaurbanga varsity

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 2:- Hundreds of supporters of AIDSO today staged a demonstration at the proposed site of the University of Gaurbanga in English Bazaar town, where its campus will be built, and demanded the completion of its infrastructure. The leaders of AIDSO alleged that without ready basic infrastructure the University authorities have already started enrollment of students, who have been admitted in the first year in 28 colleges of three districts such as Malda, North and South Dinajpur. They also demanded that University authorities have to be liable for the fate of the students if they face any problem studying in a University which still awaits UGC's recognition. The alleged university authorities would look into the problems of admission in 28 colleges which is now under its control. The leaders of AIDSO were upset today when they failed to submit a memorandum to the vice chancellor or the registrar of the University of Gaurbanga.“We had not informed the VC about our deputation on Wednesday but the V C and registrar was present in their office,” Mr. Goutam Sarkar, AIDSO leader, alleged. The university authorities have set up their office at Malda College temporarily to run the new University of Gourbanga. Finally, the AIDSO supporters burnt an effigy of the state higher education minister to protest against the decision to run such a university without a basic infrastructure.
