Erosion of Gangetic banks poses threat

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 1: Severe erosion of the Ganges bank at Domhat in Manikchak has turned the irrigation department officials apprehensive of further destruction. “The water level (22.40 metres) of the Ganges was not alarming enough for an erosion to occur but it took place,” said Mr S Misra, executive engineer, irrigation department, Malda. According to him, the situation would worsen when the water level would rise and fluctuate between 23.50 to 24 metres as monsoons intensify, eroding large chunks of lands at Gopalpur. “It could wipe out the sixth retired embankment,” Mr Misra cautioned. Meanwhile, the erosion affected residents of Jothpatta, Gopalpur, Kamat, Domhaat who are spending sleepless nights. Apprehending further destruction of land on the left bank of the Ganges, many residents have started shifting to safer areas informed irrigation officials. The irrigation engineers fear that Malda may face devastating flood if the existing sixth retired embankment is breached upon at Gopalpur in Manikchak block. It may be noted that more than 5 km was detected as vulnerable and prone to erosion in Manikchak block. The Farraka Barrage Project has carried out a 2.5 km long anti- erosion work in the area this year.
