Malignant malaria claimes 3 in Malda

MALDA, July 14: At least three people have died and six migrant workers have been detected with malignant malaria in Malda. According to the district health authorities, the affected are residents of tribal villages in Bhabuk gram panchayat of Old Malda block. Cornel Mardi died of malaria in Malda district hospital a few days ago while Shymal Tudu and Pratik Sarkar, all migrant workers, died in their respective homes recently.District health workers found out about their deaths today.The health officials have launched a surveillance exercise in the affected villages, collecting blood samples. According to the health authorities, a migrant worker called Nimai Murmu, resident of the Bhabuk area, died from malignant malaria at Dumka hospital in Jharkhand.“After the death of Nimai Murmu, the rest of the workers suffering from high fever returned to their respective homes in the Bhabuk area. The affected are undergoing treatment under the supervision of the district malaria department,” said Mr D Haldar, deputy CMOH II, Malda. Today, a team of health workers including the block medical health officer visited some villages in Bhabuk gram panchayat where many other migrant labourers suffering from fever have returned from different states including Jharkhand. Block health officials said at least six tribal labourers who went to Jharkhand for construction work have tested positive for malignant malaria. The health workers today visited Kamaldighi, Bhabuk, Shimuldhab, Chirakuti and other villages to probe into the matter and collect blood samples wherever necessary.The deputy CMOH-II, said: “The health workers will provide free medicine to those affected by malignant malaria.”
