BY-poll boost for Mahajot mission

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 17: Senior Malda district Congress leader and sabhadhipati of Malda zilla parishad, Mr Goutam Chakraborty, has said that the electoral understanding between the Congress and the Trinamul Congress in the Lok Sabha by-poll here would go a long way in deciding the state’s future politics, vis-a-vis the opposition’s resolve to end the communists’ reign in the state.“The Malda bypoll is an acid test for Bengal politics. If the by-poll alliance between the Congress and the Trinamul works and Mr AH Khan Choudhury emerges victorious, it would pave the way for a grand alliance in the state against the Left Front,” Mr Chakraborty, said. “This is for the first time that without seeking help from the BJP, the Congress and the Trinamul have fought against the CPI-M candidate in Malda. If Mr Choudhury wins, one should take this for granted that the next assembly election in the state will witness a revolution,” Mr Chakraborty said. Thanking the Trinamul supremo, Miss Mamata Banerjee, for her decision to support the Congress ignoring her party’s official alliance with the BJP, senior Congress leaders of Malda have said Miss Banerjee’s respect for the late Ghani Khan Choudhury was appreciable. It may be recalled that Ghani Khan had wanted to form a grand alliance in the state to take on the LF in the last assembly election. However, the plan did not materialise for several reasons, much to the chagrin of the grand alliance-backers here. It was also learnt that the Union I&B and parliamentary affairs minister, Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, had played a vital role in pacifying Miss Banerjee to support the Congress candidate in the Malda by-poll. Mr Subrata Mukherjee, who rejoined the Congress recently, had confessed here in an election rally that Mr Das Munshi had played a vital role to form an alliance with the Trinamul here for the by-poll.
