CM flays UPA wheat policy

MALDA, Sept. 7: Chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today criticised the UPA government’s policy to import wheat from foreign countries to meet the food crisis. He said that by importing wheat, the government had been ignoring the development of the agricultural sector, thereby “cheating” farmers. Addressing a rally at Araidanga in the run-up to the Malda Lok Sabha bypoll today, the chief minister, said: “I had warned the Prime Minister against wheat import and told him that we would not support the government if it continues to import wheat from foreign countries.” Lambasting the Centre for its apparent failure on the agricultural front, Mr Bhattacharjee said: “There has been no agricultural development and the public distribution system has been paralysed, resulting in a food crisis.” The chief minister praised Communist-ruled China, saying that: “Unlike India, there is no unemployment and poverty in China.” Mr Bhattacharjee canvassed for the CPI-M candidate, Mr Sailen Sarkar. Though the chief minister paid tributes to ABA Ghani Khan Chowdhury, he asked voters not to trust the former MP’s brother and Congress candidate Mr AH Khan Choudhury.n SNS
