IMPS students boycott classes

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 11: Hundreds of students from Institute of Management and Professional Studies (IMPS), a private engineering college here, have gone for an indefinite boycott of classes accusing the college management of initiating a “fake campus placement programme”. Nearly 700 IMPS students have started the class boycott programme, which is being spearheaded by 43 students from the Computer and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical Engineering faculties. These students have demanded re-introduction of the “genuine” campus placement programme by the IMPS management before the completion of their final examinations. They alleged that the companies, which had recently undertaken the campus selection programme in collaboration with the IMPS management, were not genuine. An IMPS student, said: “Students who had appeared in the campus placement programme did receive appointment letters, but later it was found that the companies were fake. We will continue the class boycott programme until we receive a written assurance from our college placement cell for appointment.” Dr BP Sarkar, the principal of IMPS, said: “We will be forced to close down the college, if the students continue to boycott classes. Moreover, this agitation would only create a wrong impression about these students and the employers who had come here to recruit them would ultimately reject them.” Some faculty members said that the IMPS chairman, Mr B Bhattacharjee, was in Kolkata to rope in better companies for the campus placement programme for students here. “Allegations about the college management holding fake campus selection programme was incorrect,” Mr Sarkar added. “The truth is that none of the companies are interested in coming here for recruiting just 43 students. Moreover, many students were also disqualified owing to their poor educational background during recruitment,” said a senior teacher of IMPS.
