Road services disrupted

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Sept. 25: Thousands of lorries and other vehicles have been stranded on NH-34 between Kaliachak in Malda and Jangipur in Murshidabad, a 70 km stretch, as the highway has become one-way due to incessant rainfall over the past few days. Road communication between south and north Bengal has been paralysed on NH-34 due to bad conditions of the roads. A part of the road near Jangipur had been subsided in today’s heavy rains. To save the damaged road at Jangipur in Murshidabad, the authorities concerned had adopted the one-way traffic system. Passengers of the long distant buses are the worst sufferers as they have to wait at least for six hours to cross the damaged part of the highway owing to the traffic congestion. Members of the Malda Bus Owners Association today staged a demonstration at the office of National highway Authorities of India (NHAI) located at Mangalbari in Malda. The MBOA members have threatened to gherao the NHAI office tomorrow if the initiative to improve the condition of the important highway was not taken.
