Malda Consumers' Forum slaps a fine on doctor

MALDA, Sept. 1: Malda Consumers’ Forum protection court today slapped a fine of Rs nine lakh on a doctor as compensation to the kin of a patient, who died at a nursing home here last year allegedly because of the doctor’s negligence. The forum has ordered the doctor to pay the compensation to the recipient within a period of two months, failing which he would be charged for the delay too. The MCF members informed that one Shiuli Mjumdar had wanted to abort her pregnancy legally and sought Dr M Dargahi’s suggestion and expertise in this matter. So, Shiuli got herself admitted in a nursing run by the doctor in the first month of January 2005 for abortion. It was learnt that Shiuli was re-admitted in the same nursing home later due to some health problems.She was re-aborted on 12 January at the same nursing home, following which her condition allegedly deteriorated. Shiuli was next admitted at a private nursing home in Kolkata, where it was learnt, she suffering from an infection caused due to the double abortion that had to be conducted allegedly because of the doctor’s negligence. Shiui succumbed to her infection at the nursing home in Kolkata finally. Following Shiuli’s death, her husband, Mr Kanchan Majumder and her five year-old child, Mohini, lodged a complaint with the MCF on 9 November 2005 against DrDargahi for alleged negligence that caused the patient’s death. Dr SK Jana of NRS Medical College and Hospital stand in favour of the victim in this case lodged with MCF. On the other hand, the accused had Dr Mahamaya Sarkar and Dr Pradip Roy Choudhury from Kolkata in his favour. The verdict on Dr Dargahi was passed by Judges ~ Mr Samir Chakraborty and Ms Sumana Das. Dr Dargahi told reporters that he would approach the state forum seeking justice in this case.
