Statesman News Service
MALDA/COOCH BEHAR, Sept. 26: The Congress and Trinamul Congress supporters of Malda organised an hour-long roadblock on NH-34 at Rathbari today to protest against the arrest of the Trinamul supremo, Miss Mamata Banerjee, and police lathi charge on their activists last night in connection with the government’s land acquisition programme. It was learnt that a joint rally would be organised by the Malda Congress and Trinamul Congress members here tomorrow as per directives from the state Congress high command. Malda Congress leaders today said it was high time for the Congress and the Trinamul Congress to join hands in West Bengal to dislodge the CPI-M and the Left Front from power. Meanwhile, the Trinamul Congress activists observed a protest day in Cooch Behar district today by organising roadblocks at different places, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and holding street corner meetings against the alleged “forceful” acquisition of agricultural lands from the peasants of Singur in the name of industrialisation. The Trinamul Congress sources said that a one-hour roadblock was held organised at Cooch Behar Court More, Mathabhanga, Nishiganj, Changrabandha and Baneswar. President of Cooch Behar District Trinamul Congress Mr Rabindra Natha Ghosh, president of District Trinamul Youth Congress Mr Shibendra Nath Roy and other leaders led the programme at Cooch Behar Court More. In Mathabhanga, the CPI-M supporters attacked the Trinamul Congress agitators during the programme but the police arrested 16 Trinamul supporters instead of the CPI-M supporters, Mr Ghosh alleged. Later they were released on bail. Mr Ghosh said that they would continue their campaign against the CPI-M and the Left Front till 9 October. On that day they will observe bandh in Cooch Behar district as a part of Bangla bandh called by the Trinamul Congress on Singur issue against the alleged forceful land acquisition and mishandling of party supremo Miss Mamata Bannerjee by the police, Mr Ghosh added.
