MALDA, Sept. 8: A group of local labourers met the chief minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, in English Bazaar today and and thanked him for facilitating their release from Mumbai jail in Maharastra recently. Mumbai police had arrested about 35 labourers from Malda, who had gone to Mumbai in search of jobs, alleging them to be Bangladeshi nationals. These labourers were later produced in court so that they could be kept in jail custody. Even the district administration’s initiative to release them failed. The matter was, however, taken up at the Writer’s Buildings following the intervention of political leaders. It was after the CM’s intervention that chief secretary Mr AK Deb initiated a dialogue with the Maharashtra government on this issue. Finally, a team of lawyers were sent to Mumbai, who got the labourers released from Mumbai jail some days ago. The labourers from Malda had requested the CM to transfer their case from Mumbai Court to Calcutta High Court.
