Fresh twist to fake currency racket


MALDA, Dec 9: Uttar Pradesh police suspect that the Malda couple arrested in connection with fake currency circulation has a link with ISI and militant outfits in India. The Chief Judicial magistrate Malda court today remanded the couple in Uttar Pradesh police custody for three days. A UP police team from Aligarh arrived here yesterday and sought permission from the court to take them in UP for further investigation after registering a case. Acting on a tip-off from the UP police Malda police had arrested the couple Mr Liakat Ali and her wife Mrs Saqila Banu from Kalaichak police station area, close to India Bangladesh border, on Thursday night. Mrs. Banu was the pradhan of Alipur -I gram panchayat in Kaliachak. She is a Congress member of the GP. UP police arrested a total of seven people in Aligarh in connection with fake currency circulation and after interrogation tracked down the Malda couple. The inspector, special branch of UP police, Mr B Kumar told reporters here today that the couple had a direct link with a fake Indian currency circulation racket in UP. Mr Kumar told reporters: “ We suspect that the entire racket busted in Aligarh is involved in monetary transaction behind the serial blasts in UP and had a link with ISI”. “We need to interrogate the couple for further investigation to find out how far they are connected with foreign spy agencies in connection with subversive activities and circulation of fake Indian currencies to demoralize Indian economy”, he added. It was revealed that one Satpal alias Daoud arrested in Aligarh recently who was the think tank of the racket. Police seized more than Rs 12 lakh fake currencies from their possession. Investigation revealed that Mr Liakat Ali has connection with that group of people and regularly contacted over phone directly. UP police found two bank accounts of them in UP and where the couple has more than Rs. 75 lakh in their names. But Mr Liakat Ali has only a cycle shop in Kaliachak and a few acres of croplands. The members of the racket in U P used to come Malda to receive the fake currencies from Mr. Liakat Ali. Sometimes the group used to receive fake notes from a place on station road near Malda town station, police said. After tracking mobile phones and bank transactions through ATM, U P police traced the couple and after interrogating the arrested persons in Aligarh police got the address of the couple in Kaliachak. sns
