Patients take the hit

MALDA, Dec 11: Patients at the Malda district hospital are suffering severe inconvenience following a cease work stir by contractual workers in protest against the arrest of two fellow workers. The workers were arrested on charges of assaulting a lawyer Mohammad Iqbal. They were released on personal bond later in the day.The release has turned the lawyers angry and alleging that the release process was illegal, the Malda lawyers have decided to launch an agitation from tomorrow.The police had arrested the two contractual workers Mrityunjay Ghosh and Sudam Mandal on charges of attacking the lawyer Mohammad Iqbal as he had allegedly assaulted a doctor of the hospital over the incident of a child death on 3 December.Lawyers of the Malda court observed cease work today to ensure the arrested hospital workers failed to arrange bail. The court rejected the arrested persons’ bail plea as well. The Malda district CMOH Dr Radha Raman Banik visited the Malda district hospital today and expressed unhappiness over the movement of the contract staff appointed for the cleaning the hospital. He set a deadline for the withdrawal of the movement in the interest of the public. “If they do not resume duty soon we would appoint other contract staff,” he said.Meanwhile, the contractual workers’ stir and now the proposed stir by the lawyers from tomorrow has made the Malda district administration sit up. The Malda district magistrate Mr CR Das has convened a meeting tomorrow to sort out the problems.
