Death in sterilisation camp sparks off protest

MALDA, Sept. 12: Thousands of angry people backed by Congress leaders staged an agitation in front of the Modipukur health centre in Bamongola police station today demanding compensation for a women who died after sterilisation in government hospital. Demanding punishment of the responsible doctor, irate mob blocked the highway for over three hours paralysing the block primary health centre. Police and health officials failed to pacify the agitators.According to the chief medical officer of health, Malda, Dr Radha Raman Banik, a 22-year-old woman Parul Barman was sterilised yesterday. “She was having problem in breathing and died of cardiac arrest. Dr (Mrs) Rinku Mandal, an empanelled doctor attended her and statutory tests were done but all failed,” he said. Locals, however, alleged that besides the victim Parul another patient is also not keeping well after sterilisation in the hospital.The district administration approached the Congress leadership for help in controlling the situation. The authorities assured the victim's relatives and the agitators that the district health authorities would conduct a post mortem of the victim and appropriate steps including compensation would be taken and made on the basis of the report.The CMOH Malda said: “In case of death in sterilisation camp, the government can compensate up to Rs 2 lakh.”
