Welfare home in Malda to re-open

MALDA, Sept. 26: The district administration has decided to reopen Sahapur Child Welfare Home on 15 October. The managing committee of the Home decided to revamp the Home at a meeting held on Wednesday.

It may be noted that the district administration had closed down the home when Rajib Soren, a minor inmate died after being electrocuted on 3 July this year. Police had arrested 12 inmates of the state run home on charges of rioting and damaging three government vehicles.
The Malda SDO Ms Arunima De, also the chairman of the managing committee of the Sahapur Child Welfare Home, said that a notice would be served to the guardians of all inmates, excluding the twelve who were arrested, to return to the Home on 15 October.
The district magistrate Mr C R Das has begun repair work particularly electric wiring and allotted Rs 2 lakh for the purpose.
“Another fund was allotted from Uttar Banga Unnayan Parishad for a toilet block. The BDO in Old Malda has been asked to complete the construction of toilet block by 15 October”, said Ms De.
A new superintendent will be taking charge of the Home from 15 October. It may be noted that following the complaint lodged by the administration, police have arrested Sukumar De Das, the superintendent of the Home.

The Malda SDO said the government has sanctioned 100 seats for this home where economically backward male children (below 18 years) will get an opportunity to stay at the Sahapur Child Welfare Home.(END)
