UGC gives university recognition

MALDA, Sept. 15: The University of Gour Banga (UGB) has got recognition from the University Grants Commission under section 2 (f) of the UGC Act 1956 to award degrees to the students, the registrar Dr Tapas Kumar Chatterjee said today. The UGB would apply to the UGC for development funds after its building is completed at the selected campus site in English Bazaar town. The university will request the commission to send a team to the site for inspection. According to Dr Chatterjee, after the campus soil was tested, the university plans, designs and estimated cost of the buildings have been finalised. The state government will sanction funds for the campus's construction and the state government-undertaking firm Mackintosh Burn will start construction in November. The UGB had been set up a few months ago in Malda and started functioning in an annex building of Malda College. The UGB has already completed admission of students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. A total of 31 colleges in three districts ~ Malda, North and South Dinajpur ~ have come under the University of Gour Banga. Besides BA, BSc, B Com, B Ed and LLB, post graduation courses have been started in colleges. This is for the first time in north Bengal an MA in Education for women has been started in Malda Women's College. Students were admitted in Malda College for post graduation in History and English and for MA in Bengali in Balurghat College. We are planning to start MA in Sanskrit in Balurghat College.After completion of the university campus, students for postgraduate courses will study in the campus. The UGB has launched a website ~ http://www.ugb.ac.in ~ a few days ago to provide information, notification and announcements to its affiliated colleges and students.
