Meet to combat fake currency crime along Indo-Bangla border

MALDA, Sept. 5: In order to check huge circulation of fake Indian currency from Bangladesh through the border the superintendent of police today convened a meeting with the border security force and bank officials in Malda. Expressing concern about the circulation of fake notes in recent times the district police have planned to launch a special drive along the border jointly with the border security force. “The objective of this drive is to bring about awareness among the people living along the border about circulation of fake Indian currency and it adverse effect on the economy so that they can help spot people involved in this menace,” said Mr Satayjit Bandyopadhayay, the Malda SP. “We are concerned about the fact that people are indulging in such activities to earn instant money. We need to stop such practice immediately”, the SP said. At a meeting with the Malda SP it was decided that the Border Security Force would also step up vigilance along the border to stop transportation of fake Indian currency from Bangladesh. On the other hand, the bank officials have been requested to identify fake notes and to inform police. The decision was taken after arrest of several Indian people including woman on charges of carrying fake Indian currency from the Bangladesh border in Kaliachak area recently. The 108-battalion BSF has seized more than Rs 12 lakh fake Indian currencies and intercepted several local people living along the border in the recent past. The BSF has informed district administration that people who live along the border including women have engaged in such crime keeping a close contact with Bangladeshi agents.(END)
