MALDA, 26 NOV: At least three persons including a woman were killed and more than 15 others were injured in a road accident on the state highway at Badnagra in Gazole police station today.
The deceased have been identified as Ketan Murmu, a vegetable vendor, Satya Sarkar (65) and Laxmi Mardi (55).
The accident took place when a packed trekker ran over Ketan Murmu, who was riding a bi-cycle, and overturned, in a roadside ditch.
“The vehicle, which was travelling from Salaidanga to a local market at Gazole lost control and overturned,” the police said.
While the cyclist died on the spot, the others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
The conditions of two of the 15 injured, admitted in the Gazole rural health centre, are critical.
The attending doctors have referred the two patients to the Malda district hospital.
Angry locals blocked road in protest against rash driving. The police intervened to bring the situation under control.
The driver of the vehicle fled the area after the accident and the police expect him to surrender.
