South Malda MP allots fund to improve water projects

Statesman News Service
MALDA, 5 NOV.:
South Malda MP Mr. AH Khan Choudhury finally allotted Rs.25 lakh for the improvement of drinking water supply to the English Bazaar Municipality (EBM).
The Congress led EBM had demanded Rs.50 lakh from the MP for the restoration of some pump houses which were not functioning properly in extracting water from underground.
The chairman of the EBM Mr. Narendranath Tiwari said the MP has allotted the first installment of the required fund and he promised the district magistrate Mr. Sridhar Ghosh that he would allot the rest of it for restoration of pump houses and deep tube wells which would be carried out by the PHE.
In the first phase the EBM has set a target of restoring seven pump houses in different areas.
According to the chairman of the EBM, nearly 14 pump houses are very old and are on the verge of breakdown.
“In summer season we face a lot of difficulties to supply water when ground water level drops abnormally here”, Mr. Tiwari said.
He also said that local residents of newly built various residential complexes were lifting water from underground drastically without seeking any permission and as a result the underground water level was going down in the area.
The EBM authorities have said they did have their own fund to repair these old pump houses.
They alleged that though the ten chairman of the EBM, Mr. Krishnendu Choudhury took initiative to collect water tax of the Rs. 30 per month from every house of the area in order to maintain these pump houses, but the CPI-M board had reduced the rate of water tax to Rs. 15 per month.
