MALDA, 10 NOV: The irrigation department has planned to begin restoration of a 10 km-long circuit embankment in Gazole block for flood protection, from January, 2010. The National Bank for agriculture and rural development (Nabard) would finance the Rs 1.72 crore project.According to the executive engineer of the irrigation department in Malda, restoration work will prevent the flooding of Gazole by river Srimati. The major restoration work will begin from Kuriadaha and Kanchanbil area, where the existing embankment is at a vulnerable stage."At Kanchanbil, a sluice gate, which was constructed before Independence, will be reconstructed," said the executive engineer, Mr S Misra.More than Rs 30 lakhs has been estimated as the construction cost of the sluice gate.Besides, restoration work for the embankments at Itakhola and Akandipur in Old Malda, and anti-erosion work at Kupadaha in Habibpur block, will begin from January, next year. With assistance from Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), the irrigation department will also start raising and strengthening work of the existing retired embankment no. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on the bank of the Ganga, for flood protection. This entire process was stalled due to model code of conduct for by-polls. “Within a few days, just after lifting of model code of conduct, the entire process will begin, so that we can finish the work before monsoon," said Mr. Misra.
