"AN Khan is anti-national"

MALDA, 4 NOV.:
The CPI-M has started campaigning against the Congress candidate in Sujapur, Mr. AN Khan Choudhury, slamming him as anti national.
Though the CPI-M leaders did not lodge any complaint against Mr. Khan Choudhury, when he had applied to the Malda district administrationfor inclusion of his name in the voters’ list just before nominations, the CPI-M called him anti national just to prevent him from earning sentimental wave of the brother ABA Ghani Khan Choudhury, who was believed to the Malda Congress patriarch.
The CPI-M district leaders have circulated a letter of the then union minister of the programme implementation ABA Ghani Khan Choudhury where he had identified his brother Mr. AN Khan Choudhury as an anti national and asked the Ministry of home affairs to take action against him.
According to the leaflet circulated in Sujapur Assembly segment, the private secretary of Ghani Khan Choudhury, Mr. A Khaliq had written a letter to the then joint secretary of the Ministry of home affairs , Mr. Arun Kumar on 16 August 1986 and informed him: “Mr. A N Khan Choudhury, a British citizen and his wife, a Swiss citizen, have been keeping in touch with some leaders since couple of month, who are very closely associated with Gorkhaland agitation and plan to separate the entire valley of Himalaya from the map of the West Bengal”.
The letter further said “Every night some unknown persons have been noticed coming from Darjeeling seeking financial help at Kotwali, ancestral house of Ghani Khan. The union minister Ghani Khan has asked me to inform you to take action against such a conspiracy and they should be asked to leave the country as soon as possible”.
Mr. AN Khan Choudhury had to leave the country after some days but he returned to Malda latter and contested against his brother Ghani Khan in 1996 in parliamentary election as Independent candidate.
The CPI-M leaders while campaigning in Sujapur Assembly segment have thus brought the issue in front of the voters and have elaborated on how the Congress nominated Mr. AN Khan as candidate for Sujapur against the will of their ‘Barkat-da’, the pet name of Ghani Khan Choudhury.
However, Mr. AN Khan Choudhury, was not available today for comment over the issue because he was busy with election campaigning. Mr. Khan Choudhury, reportedly have said that the matter was very old misunderstanding between their family and that he had latter resolved it.
The Congress leader Mr. Krishnendu Choudhury, English Bazaar MLA said: “The CPI-M leaders in Malda are fond of cheap politics and try to malign its rivals. They would not be successful in this election”.


Voters to boycott poll to protest against lack of amenities



MALDA, 4 NOV.: Protesting against lack of basic amenities in the area, a large number of voters of Titihipara under Mothatbari gram panchahayt in Sujapur Assembly constituency have decided to boycott the Sujapur by-election. The voters, who are mostly Congress supporters, are trying to whip up sentiment on the issue hand have called for more people to boycott the by-poll.
Mr. Badiruddin Sheikh, a CPI-M supporter, alleged that neither the CPI-M nor the Congress had taken initiative to provide drinking water and electricity in his village. “The political leaders promise a lot before elections but do nothing once it is over”, he alleged. A section of villagers held the MLAs including the late Rubi Noor, sister of ABA Ghani Khan Choudhury and mother of north Malda Congress MP Miss Mausam Noor, for failing to take up the matter during their tenure.
A congress leader of Kaliachak-II, Mr. Subodh Misra, admitted the plight of the people at Titihipara. “However, we expect them to withdraw the boycott call. A boycott would not bring results. We suspect the CPI-M is trying to instigate them to call for a boycott to reduce the Congress votes”, he said. According to Mr. Misra, the Congress run Malda Zilla Parishad took the initiative to provide electricity to the village a few months back. “But the contractors assigned could not start the work due to election. Electrification work would begin at Titihipara after the by-poll, Mr. Misra added.
Meanwhile, the Centre has sent three company and a platoon of Central forces for the Sujapur by-poll. The Malda SP Mr. Bhuban Mandal said that the Central forces have been stationed at Gayesbari, Jadupur and Mothabari in the Assembly segment. “They have begun marching in the sensitive and hyper sensitive areas”, the SP informed.
The district magistrate Mr. Sridhar Ghosh said that the Central forces would be deployed in 107 polling stations. “Armed forces would cover the rest polling stations”, he added.
A total of 123-micro observes would be deployed to monitor polling throughout the day. Two hundred and seventy eight presiding officers have been appointed for poll purpose and 241 cameramen would be pressed to record polling in the booths. SNS
