Highway project: Landowners demand fair compensation


MALDA, 12 NOV: Hundreds of land owners in Gazole have appealed to the additional district magistrate, land reforms, in Malda demanding fair compensation, after a mammoth project of widening the National Highway~34 was announced.

A notification regarding acquisition of land was issued in August this year.

The additional district magistrate, land reforms has taken care of the applications submitted by the locals, though the hearing date is yet to be finalised.

A senior officer of the land acquisition department said almost everybody agreed to offer their land for the project, but they want acquisition to be legitimate and are demanding a fair compensation.

Meanwhile, the national highway authorities issued notification specifying plot of lands, mostly agricultural lands, in Kaliachak, English Bazaar and in Old Malda block areas for the construction of a bypass, for widening and strengthening the existing national highway in this zone.

The national highway authorities had planned to build a bypass in areas where the National Highway was passing through town and market places.

After conducting a survey, authorities had selected plot of lands for construction of more than 2.5 km long bypass in Kaliachak market place and nearly 9.5 km long highway to bypass the English Bazaar town and Mangabari town in Old Malda.

The national highway authorities today published notification in newspapers inviting claims and objections. ;SNS
