MALDA, 12 NOV: Mr Saidul Rahaman ~ a daily wage earner ~ has written to chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattachajee, pleading for mercy killing as he no longer can bear the expenses for the treatment of his two children who are suffering from thalassemia. In a letter addressed to the chief minister, Mr Rahaman and his his wife Mrs Marjina Bibi, residents of Samsabad that falls under the jurisdiction of Madnavati gram panchayat in Bamongola block, said they wanted to end their lives because they did not have money to collect blood for their kids ~ Mostakim Hossain (8) and Mamoni Khatun (5). “It is very difficult to lead such a poverty-stricken life and after having failed to mange funds for collecting blood for my children, I think it is better to die”, said Mr Rahaman. His wife said a lot of blood is needed for transfusion, but even after appealing to the local leaders including the local MLA and block office, the Malda district hospital authorities did not offer any kind of help. The local CPI-M MLA from Habibpur Assembly, Mr Khagen Murmu, however confirmed his office was not informed about their plight. According to him, NGOs too should come forward to help, although sources said the block authorities have decided to send a team to examine the condition of the family. When contacted, Mr Soumitra Datta, a member of voluntary blood donors’ forum for children suffering from thalassemia said: “The names of the victims have not been registered yet. We have a list of patients who are entitled to free treatment. We asked Mr Rahaman to contact us but they did tell us about the present position of their two children." Meanwhile, a senior doctor at the Malda district hospital passed the buck onto the poor infrastructure in the state. "They need to go down South for better treatment”, he rued. Despite, repeated attempts the CMOH in Malda was not available for comment.
