Irrigation dept awaits Centre’s nod for erosion project

MALDA, 9 NOV:
The state irrigation and waterways department is waiting for permission from the Central water commission for taking up anti-erosion work along India-Bangladesh border in three districts like Malda, North and South Dinajpur.
Following the instruction of the Central water resources department, the district irrigation officials have submitted technical data to the Centre last week. According to Mr S Misra, the executive engineer of the irrigation division in Malda, the meeting of joint river commission is scheduled in last week of November.
“After the meeting between the officials of India and Bangladesh, the Central water commission will give instruction to start the anti erosion work on banks of the Punarbhaba in Malda, Atreye in South Dinajpur and Nagar in North Dinajpur and others river of these three districts”, said Mr Misra.
The objective of this meeting will be to discuss the problems of the two countries due to erosion and to stem erosion for the protection of lands on either the side of the border line as has been etched by the rivers.
“The officials will exchange data and interact for the proposed anti erosion work so that both the countries don't suffer any negative impact of the anti-erosion works”, the executive engineer said.
