Hilli traders turn heat on BSF

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 5: The Hilli Exporters’ and Customs Clearing Agents’ Association today reacted sharply to the BSF’s allegation that sugar smuggling was rampant at Hilli Land Customs Station in South Dinajpur. Terming the allegation baseless, Mr Ashoke Kumar Mondal, the secretary of the association, said: “The BSF authorities are free to check the vehicles used for ‘export’ with the help of Customs officials. Instead of blaming the exporters, they should check the vehicles if they have any doubt.” Yesterday, a day after 300 quintals of sugar that was being smuggled to Bangladesh through the Hilli Land Customs Station was seized, Mr Rudra, a senior BSF Intelligence official of Malda sector, had reportedly alleged that traders routinely smuggle large quantities of sugar to Bangladesh through this Land Customs Station by showing forged documents.
