Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 30: Malda police have arrested three youths of a minority community on charges of sexually abusing and then killing a 12-year-old schoolgirl at Bakchar village in Malda’s Bamongola police station area on Friday evening. The village where the incident occurred is close to the Indo-Bangladesh border, police said. The trio Anarul, Jahagir and Mithu were produced in the court today “We have also detained another youth, Udbhav Sarkar, today in connection with the incident after interrogating the three accused,” the Malda additional SP, Mr D Boral, said. “We have recovered a spade, a broad-bladed digging tool, from the house of Jahagir. The trio had used the spade to dig the ground to bury the body of the girl after the incident,” Mr Boral said. The incident occurred when the girl was returning home from her private tutor’s house. Apprehending a communal flare up, the Malda district administration has deployed a large number of police personnel in the area. A police camp has also been set up in the area to defuse communal tension. Local BJP leaders have condemned the incident and held a meeting here today to discuss it. Tension prevailed in the area after the news of the youths’ barbaric act spread. The sub divisional officer (sadar), Mr PK Mandal, rushed to the spot yesterday to take stock of the situation. He also met the family members of the victim and the villagers, urging them to maintain peace.
