Release of Malda labourers demanded

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 4: The state government has approached the Maharashtra government to take initiatives to release the 17 Malda labourers, who were arrested by Maharashtra Police last month, on charges of being Bangladeshi nationals. A letter was reportedly sent to the Thane police station last month by the then Malda district magistrate, Mr Abhijit Choudhuri. The DM, in his letter, had requested the police officials of Thane in Maharashtra to release the 17 Malda residents. It was learnt that these labourers had gone to Thane in Maharashtra in search of employment and were arrested inspite of possessing residential certificates, said a Malda district administration official. The new Malda DM, Mr Chittaranjan Das, took up the issue regarding the release of the labourers today with the chief secretary. Mr Das also instructed Malda SP to contact the Mumbai Police and inquire the status of the arrested Malda workers. The latter has also been directed to find out why no initiative was taken to release the labourers despite possession of residential certificates issued by the district collector. Mr Chittaranjan Das was however, informed that no response could be elicited from the Thane police station when they were contacted via telephone today. Malda Police finally contacted Mr Niket Kousik, a senior police official in Maharashtra to look into the matter. It was learnt that Mr Kousik was the ASP in the Malda district few years ago, who was transferred to Maharashtra later. Mr Kousik has assured Malda Police that he would look into the matter personally.
