Strict vigil along border

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 13: Security has been tightened across Malda district, especially in the Indo-Bangla border areas, following the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai, police said. Plain clothed policemen have been deployed in vital installations, including Malda station, for ensuring security measures. Senior police officers in charge of border areas are in constant touch with their BSF counterparts. Highway patrolling has also been stepped up at night. Railway police have been instructed to keep a watch on railway bridges. Asked about the movement of SIMI activists in the district, the Malda SP said that, he had not received any instruction so far from concerned authorities to have a crackdown on the activists, suspected to be involved in the Mumbai blasts. Union home secretary, Mr VK Duggal had yesterday hinted that, the Centre would crack down on SIMI activists. SIMI has a branch in Malda. Malda police had arrested a few persons in connection with SIMI, a few years ago. But the then political leaders, including CPI leader and minister, Mr Srikumar Mukherjee, had protested against the arrest. All the arrested persons were recently released from Malda jail.
