Parties gearing up for Malda by-poll

Statesman News Service
MALDA, July 2: Though the Congress, Trinamul Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have together formed the Malda Zilla Parishad and also the English Bazaar Municipality, this time the three political parties will contest individually in the forthcoming Malda Lok Sabha by-poll likely to be held in September. Even though the BJP and the Trinamul Congress share an official alliance at the state-level, in the Malda by-poll both will contest each other this time. Trinamul Congress leader of Malda Mr Dulal Sarkar, said: “ We have decided to nominate a candidate in the by-poll just to keep existence of our party. It is nothing but a struggle for existence after split of the Malda Trinamul Congress.” The former district Trinamul Congress chief, Mr KN Choudhury, was elected as an MLA on a Congress ticket during the last Assembly election and he had refused to contest on a Trinamul Congress ticket in English Bazaar seat. As a result, the Malda Trinamul Congress has no solid existence in Malda. Few leaders and workers lobbying against Mr KN Choudhury are struggling to execute party activities here. Though there was an official adjustment between the BJP and the Trinamul Congress during the last Assembly polls, the present decision has upset the district BJP leaders. On the other hand, the district BJP has sent nine names from Malda to the state committee for selection of one candidate for the Malda by-poll. The Malda Congress has already announced the name of its contesting candidate for the by- poll. After the death of Malda MP and Congress stalwart ABA Ghani Khan Chouhdury, his brother Mr Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury will contest here. The CPI-M is yet to announce the name of its candidate officially, but it was learnt that Mr Sailen Sarkar, the present state parliamentary affairs minister, will contest in Malda by-poll.
