CPM, Congress fight over Malda zilla parishad

MALDA, March 6: While the Malda Left Front is preparing to stage demonstration in front of the Malda zilla parishad (MZP) tomorrow terming the board as ‘corrupted’, the Congress led MZP sabhadhipati Mr Goutam Chakraborty showcased a corruption charge against the CPI-M leaders today.Addressing a press conference at his chamber of MZP Mr Goutam Chakraborty claimed that the CPI-M leaders including the CPI-M MLA and former sahakari sabhadhipati of MZP Mr Khagben Murmu tampered with a list of beneficiaries and included two new names of Ms Laxmi Tudu and Ms Sima Soren to provide compensation for acquiring land.According to sabhadhipati, a plot of land was required to build a stadium in Bamongola Block area in 2001-2002. There were 24 beneficiaries enlisted to be compensated. But in 2007 they enlisted two more names writing off two names from the original list illegally in connivance with the block and panchayat samiti officials. “The finance permanent committee of the MZP did not approve the fresh proposal”, Mr Chakraborty said. Interestingly, when the Malda CPI-M district secretary, accused the district magistrate of taking prompt action against the CPI-M led civic body on the basis of complaints of corruption, the sabhadhipati blamed the district magistrate for favouring the CPI-M in many cases. Citing an example, sabhadhipati told reporters that the district magistrate Mr CR Das did a lot to pursue a scheme proposed by the CPI-M leaders for seeking funds from Uttar Banga Unnayan Parishad within a month but he did nothing for a scheme proposed by us to seek fund from the same body.Government officials refused to comment on it to keep a safe distance from politics. The MZP sabhadhipati Mr Chakraborty has called a ‘adjourned’ meeting tomorrow to table its revised draft budget again failing to pass it due to lack of its majority members in last two meetings. The CPI-M led LF members would boycott the meeting and the district LF leaders will stage demonstration in front of the MZP tomorrow.Speaking to the reporters, sabhadhipati said: “If they do not want to extend cooperation to pass the budget for 2008-09, we will not face problem at present because the term will be ended before May. Why are they creating problem for next financial year's budget. Are they apprehending that they would not come into power after forthcoming election?” n sns
