CPM skips Malda Zilla Parishad meeting

Statesman News Service
MALDA, March 7: The 2008-09 budget of the Malda zilla parishad has grown uncertain with the CPI-M boycotting the budget meeting today. Angered with the CPI-M's stand to abstain, the Congress has decided to go to town about it and portray the CPI-M as a villain.“The CPI-M does not want development in Malda district, which is why it tried to stall the zilla parishad budget. The Congress would expose the CPI-M’s design,” threatened Malda district Congress president Mrs Rubi Noor. The Malda district magistrate Mr C R Das, who is also the MZP executive officer expressed concern with the matter. “I do not know the fate of the MZP’s budget. We have to inform the state government about the situation. The MZP board will make an ‘ad interim budget’ after 31 March for one month (April 2008) to run the institution,” Mr Das said. The Malda Congress leaders today held a meeting in Malda town to counter the CPI-M’s agitation programme calling the Marxists ‘anti people’ and held the CPI-M responsible for the failure to pass the budget. The LF leaders mainly belonging to the CPI-M were vocal against the present MZP board led by the Congress, BJP and the Trinamul today. They tried hard to establish their stand exposing some examples of financial irregularities against the board terming it ‘corrupted.’Of the 61 members of the MZP, only 26 including the MLAs were present in the MZP board meeting today. The Malda MP and the Congress leader, being an ex- officio member, was also absent.
