Bird Flu: Disinfection programme initiated in Malda

MALDA, March 27:- The officials at Malda animal resources development started a two day disinfection programme today at Bird Flu affected zones within three km radius from the epicentre, -- state run poultry farm in English Bazaar town -- following the end of culling and mopping up drive.

After fresh out break of Bird Flu, a total of 23,572 birds were culled in seven days. Though the department initially had estimated nearly 45,000 birds' population but later the figure was reduced to 23,500 following a survey during culling operation.

The private poultry farm owners have been asked to disinfect their farm houses immediately.

"Our staffs will disinfect the places of domestic bird habitats - the private poultry houses where the private farm owners are reluctant to disinfect the cage of poultry", said Mr. N K Shit, the deputy director, ARD in Malda.

"We will try to pick up stray birds from the infected zone, if our staffs spot then ", Mr. Shit said.

Sources said a few places still remained unattended. A particular area at Pirojpur, close to the Malda women's college staff quarters, has been left out and some backyard chickens are on the loose.

Following the death of dozens of pigeons at kalitala, the ARD officials took all living birds pegion from that area and finally culled them
