Police detect opium cultivation near India Bangladesh border

MALDA, March 20: Malda police have sought names of land owners from the land and land reforms department after detecting a large scale of opium cultivation in Kaliachak police station area, close to India-Bangladesh border.Police are trying to curb the culture of opium cultivation across the district with the help of excise department. According to the Malda SP, police are identifying opium cultivated lands across the district and with help of the Bengal excise department are destroying the cultivated opium plants. Though the police identified 15 acres of land where opium cultivation was almost ready for harvest,it could not destroy the harvest completely yesterday.“The destruction is going on till today”, said Mr Satyajit Bandyopadhayay, the Malda S P. “We could not arrest any one on charges of cultivating opium . We have decided to identify the land owners. We have sought the names of land owners from the land departments. We will start the process of necessary action from land owners”, Malda S P said.
