Girl fleeing traffickers set ablaze

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Aug 13: Flesh trade racketeers allegedly set a girl on fire when she refused to take to prostitution at Hansagiri Lane, a red light area in English Bazaar town today, police said. Police also said the girl Ritu Taneja ( 20), was brought here from Haryana two days back. Local people extended help to her when she was fleeing with burns around afternoon today, eye witnesses said. She was admitted to the district hospital by locals and her condition was stated to be critical. She was lured by some other girls who offered her a better job here, a senior police officer said, after initiating a case on it. “The pimps and owner of the brothel were forcing her to take to prostitution,” said Ms Atryee Sen , the investigating officer. “They threw kerosene and set her ablaze when she was trying to flee,” Ms Sen added. However, the inmates of the red light area are denying the charges. The upper portion of her body was seriously burnt, doctors said. It was learnt that she reportedly identified one of the girls who set fire on her. Police have started investigation to nab the culprits soon. Many minor girls were rescued from Hansagiri Lane in English Bazaar town in the past few years, who were forced into prostitution.
