Girl set ablaze by traffickers dies

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Aug. 14: Ritu Taneja (20), who was allegedly set ablaze by flesh trade racketeers yesterday for refusing to take up prostitution, succumbed to her injuries at the Malda district hospital today. Police said that Ritu was brought to the red-light area at Hansagiri Lane in English Bazaar town three days back from Haryana. The brothel-owners set her ablaze after she refused to take to prostitution. Malda SP Mr DK Mondal said that the accused person named in the FIR had fled the area after the incident. But, Mr Mondal assured that the police would soon nab the kingpins of the flesh-trade racket here. Locals yesterday extended help to Ritu while she was fleeing from the flesh trade racketeers after being set ablaze. They rushed her to the district hospital in a critical condition and later informed police about the matter. Sources said that the flesh trade racketeers wanted to kill Ritu not only because she refused to take to prostitution, she also threatened them that she would disclose everything to the police. An investigating officer said that the accused threw kerosene on Ritu and set her ablaze when she tried to flee. Many minor girls had been rescued from the Hansagiri Lane in English Bazaar town in the past few years who were forced to take up prostitution.
