Major clash over minor dispute

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Aug. 25: Mahadipur High School, situated near the Indo-Bangladesh border, turned into a virtual battlefield today after students clashed following a minor dispute over drinking water. The tension escalated when some outsiders entered the school premises and joined the scuffle, police said. It soon took a communal colour prompting the BSF jawans to intervene. “The BSF had to open fire to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control,” Malda SP Mr DK Mondal said. He added: “Four students were the main culprits behind the clash but as the teachers did not disclose their identity, we could not take action against them.” The in-charge of the school said the dispute flared up yesterday between students of two communities over the issue of drinking water in the school premises. “We had sorted out the problem yesterday. But some outsiders entered the school and created fresh problems today,” he told reporters. Mr Mondal said BSF officials rushed to the school and brought the situation under control, driving the troublemakers out of the school premises.#
