Women protest , commuters suffer

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Aug. 14: Vehicular movement was temporary paralysed in the English Bazaar town today owing to a traffic congestion caused by thousands of women, who had gathered for a protest rally organised by the CPI-M. The rally was convened at Brindabani play ground by the CPI-M backed women’s wing, with support from other Left Front backed women’s organisations of the district. It was learnt that the rally was organised due to a number of reasons. A crucial reason behind organising this rally was to protest against a Congress MLA, who allegedly slapped a woman panchayat member during a meeting in English Bazaar block a few days ago. Another reason behind organising this rally was to campaign for the Malda Lok Sabha by-poll as well as to highlight a 10-point charter of demands. The state minister for parliamentary affairs, Mr Sailen Sarkar, former state minister and CPI-M leader, Mrs Minati Ghosh, as well as other MLAs were present in the rally. Mr Sailen Sarkar lashed out at the Congress leaders, including the district Congress president, Mrs Rubi Noor and Congress MLA, Mr KN Choudhury, during the rally. Mr Sarkar alleged that Mr KN Choudhury was an accused in twin murder case of Bihar and that the police are not taking any action against him.
