Hot water keeps coming

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Aug. 10: In a bid to solve the mystery surrounding the emission of hot water from a rat hole in a paddy field at Kailashpur village in Old Malda block, the Malda district magistrate, Mr Chittaranjan Das, today contacted the Geological Survey of India officials to help locals solve this mystery.
It was learnt that the Malda DM has asked the GSI authorities to find out if there is a scientific reason behind the emission of hot water from the rat hole.
The block development officer, Ms Kasturi Sengupta, collected the water sample from the rat hole yesterday and submitted her report to the Malda DM, suggesting him to order a chemical test to be carried out.
Mr Chittaranjan Das has sent the water sample to the Public Health Engineering department for chemical testing and is now seeking help from the geology experts to find out the reason behind this unusual incidence.
Reportedly, the water sample tested at the local PHE lab has been found normal.
Yet, concerned officials have planned to send the water sample to a bigger lab for sulphur composition testing.
The Malda district magistrate today instructed sub-divisional officer, headquarters, Mrs Arunima De, to visit the spot and find out any new development.
Villagers here are still petrified by this unusual occurrence and are visiting in hordes to see the hot water being emitted from the rat hole in Kailashpur village here in spite of heavy rainfall received last night.
The BDO also visited the area yesterday and called for stationing of police forces there to control the hundreds of villagers, who have gathered there to watch the hot water emission.
The pradhan of Muchia Gram Panchayat, Mr Asit Sarkar, said that the rat hole is still emitting hot water, a process that began last Tuesday and that even the adjoining water bodies have now heated up.
He said: “ Farmers are apprehensive about its possible effect on the aman cultivation in the adjoining areas”.
The block development officer, Ms Kasturi Sengupta, said: “Villagers told me that green grass surrounding the rat hole has dried up after the emission of hot water initiated. They even boiled potatoes and eggs in the rat hole and they were tested to be okay. I have reported the matter to the DM”. #
