12-hour traders' strike

MALDA, Feb. 10: Protesting against alleged police inaction to save a trader being looted by criminals, the Bulbulchandi Merchants’ Association has convened a 12-hour traders’ strike in local markets tomorrow.

The Malda Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce officials, said despite several reminders, the Habibpur police station did not take steps when criminals were looting the house of a trader Mr Bijan Pal last evening. The victim, a cloth merchant, claimed that criminals looted valuables worth Rs 10 lakh from his house located near the Bulbulchandi Girls’ School. A police picket has been posted at the spot to avoid any untoward incident.

Police officials on the other hand said that trouble erupted following a land dispute between

Mr Pal and his neigbour after the former started constructing a boundary wall.

We have informed the matter to the IC Habibpur PS, and the Malda SP. The criminals broke the boundary wall under construction and looted the house from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Though a police team reached the spot about 7.30 p.m. it did not resist the crime,” said Mr Jayanta Kundu, district secretary, MMCC. n SNS
