Silk fair to be held for farmers


MALDA, Feb. 11: Central sericulture research and training institute (CSRTI) will organise a Resham Krishi Mela at Malda college auditorium on 12 February.

The fair would educate the sericulture farmers of this state on new and improved sericulture technology developed by the institute. It would cover topics such as mulberry cultivation; silkworm rearing; integrated pest, disease and nutrient management, and post-cocoon technologies.

Dr AK Bajpai, director of the CSRTI in Berhampore, will organise the fair and act as spokesperson for its objectives.

The CSRTI will give awards to four farmers who have most substantially improved productivity during the years 2006-07 through adopting the latest technologies. The four, who hail respectively from major sericulture districts Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Nadia, will receive their prizes at the fair tomorrow.

Sericulture farmers, extension officials, scientists and stakeholders will take part in the interaction session discussing problems facing sericulture today. The scientists will suggest suitable remedies and guidance for the benefit of stakeholders in this sector.

The CSRTI will also distribute a booklet including practical demonstrations of the new technologies to farmers attending the exhibition.

Key figures attending the fair will include chairman of the Central silk board Mr H Hanumanthappa, principal secretary Dr GD Goutama, commissioner of textiles in West Bengal Mr MK Pant, director of textiles (Seri) Mr Ramapada Biswas, Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh and the sabhadhipati of Malda zilla parishad, Mrs Sabina Yeasmin.
