Merchant body against foreign investment in malls

MALDA, Feb. 15: Leaders of the Malda Merchant Chamber of Commerce (MMCC) and Federation of Traders’ Organisations (FTO) of Bengal today protested against foreign investment in shopping malls at the district level.

They were addressing an open assembly for a state conference of the Federation of Traders’ Organisations in English Bazaar town today.

MMCC district secretary Mr Jayanta Kundu said they would never allow Reliance to open shopping malls here and warned the administration against permitting Reliance from doing so.

Mr Kundu criticised the attitude and atrocities of local police officers in different areas. According to him, local traders are being forced to give away many items without being paid for them.

The MMCC district secretary also criticised the performance of English Bazaar municipality and claimed that it was not doing enough for the interests of traders in the various markets.

“The municipal markets are old and dilapidated and need repair,” he said. Also present at the open assembly was the president of the Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal, Mr Shyam Bihari Mishra.

The MMCC leaders demanded development of industries ~ the agro-based industries of silk and mangoes in particular, development of National Highway 34, more trains and more stoppages of some long-distance trains in many important stations including in Kaliachak area. n SNS
