Now, Trinamul backs Malda agitation

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 6: The Trinamul Congress in Malda is now taking up the tribals’ cause. Demonstrating at the Malda district magistrate's office today, the Trinamul leadership said that the land reserved for the tribal population has been grabbed in the district while the state government remained a mute spectator. They demanded restoration of such land to their rightful owners.

The Trinamul district president, Mr Dulal Sarkar, said: “Much of the tribal land has been illegally transferred to non-tribals but the government officials did nothing to recover those plots of land. Complaints lodged with the backward class welfare department in this context, are still pending.”

“The problem is acute in the Bamongola, Habibpur, Gazole and Old Malda blocks where backed by the CPI-M, non-tribals have usurped tribal land.” According to him, the Adivasi Jiban Jibika Raksha Samity, which is a platform of the Trinamul Congress, CPI-ML, Jharkand Party, Suci and other groups, is working for restoration of tribal land.

The Trinamul leadership today submitted a 10-point charter of demands highlighting the plight of tribals at Bamongola, Gazol, Habibpur and Old Malda to the district magistrate.

Refuting the allegation, the CPI-M MLA from Habibpur, Mr Khagen Murmu said: “We have heard about the formation of a committee which is demanding restoration of tribal land grabbed by non-tribals. We apprehend law and order problem if the committee misleads the tribals.”
