Murshidabad ranks top at sports meet

MALDA, Feb. 15: Murshidabad district finished top at the 26th state level primary children sports meet, 2009, securing 58 points in all. The sports meet, which had started on 12 February at Malda district sports association ground, concluded last evening. Nadia and Hooghly districts secured second and third positions obtaining 49 and 48 points respectively. Malda district ranked fourth with 20 points. Pintu Mandal, a student of Baishnabnagar in Malda district, alone secured 10 points. Away from the playing arena, however, teachers and chairmen of primary councils from different districts alleged mismanagement in providing food to the participants on time. Organisers found it difficult to provide meals on time since the evening of 11 February as a number of teams and teachers decided to stay on for an extra day. The organisers were also criticised by insiders for collecting extra subscriptions from other district primary school councils for publication of souvenir and from teachers despite sufficient funds allotted by the government. n SNS
