Missing money forces SBI ATM's closure

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 12: The closure of the two State Bank of India ATMs in English Bazaar town since the last week of January is causing the public considerable difficulty.

The SBI authorities had to close the ATMs down for “internal” departmental inquiry on 28 January when the ATM officer had detected that a total of Rs 14,25,700 was missing from the two ATMs.

Nearly Rs 11.12 lakh was missing from the reserve bin of ATM-II, located at the government-run Malda Tourist Lodge. An expert team came to Malda to visit the ATM yesterday and collected data to detect anomalies in the physical cash balance in the reserve bin.

The chief manager of the Malda SBI refused to comment on the findings of the expert team and when the ATMs would be restored for public use. “The expert team came yesterday and left for Kolkata for collection of data for analysis. Sorry, I will not disclose any details about the findings right now. Please contact later,” said Mr SK Chakraborty.

The general manager (ATM) of SBI, Mr Tapan Mitra, came to Malda yesterday and visited the two ATMs in the presence of police. According to police, Mr Mitra suspected that there was a counting error in the statement of transactions produced by the ATMs.
