Students suffer for govt programmes

Manas Bannerjee
MALDA, Feb. 11: Frustrated with the successive requisition of one of Malda's most popular institution the Barlow Girls’ High School to arrange government programmes at the cost of studies, a section of guardians have raised voice in protest.
Pleading helpless in the matter, the headmistress, Mrs Pranati Dasgupta, advised the guardians to draw the attention of the administration on the matter. “We cannot refuse requisitions from the district magistrate and district inspector of schools,” she said admitting that a number of classes have been hampered due to the requisitions.
It may be noted that the district magistrate had requisitioned the Barlow Girls’ High School for the counting exercise of the Sujapur by-polls in the third week of December. Incidentally, the by-poll was deferred from 26 December to 5 January and vacation in the school had to be extended due to the deferment.
The district administration has again requisitioned the Barlow Girls’ school for four days from today to accommodate participants from different districts for the state level primary children sports meet starting tomorrow.
Reacting to the development, the Barlow Girls’ School headmistress said: “The students of our school have suffered a lot and we fear we would not be able to arrange 200 working days for students, which is mandatory, this session. We could not conduct the fifth unit tests due to requisition for the by-poll counting. We were also forced to reschedule all exams and classes hurriedly despite objections from guardians and students for the additional requisition.”
“It is unfair that a particular school would have to suffer in such manner,” said a guardian Dr Niladri Saha.
“I can not comment on the matter as the school subject is a matter of the education department. The administration would not requisition the school without an emergency such as elections,” said the Malda district magistrate Mr Sridhar Ghosh. (END)
