Malda municipality act on waste management

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 4: The English Bazaar Municipality has decided to shift its garbage dumping ground from Chandan Park in the town following a government directive on implementing solid waste management programme and the guideline of the Pollution Control Board.

Residents of ward number 25, who have suffered unusually from health problems, blamed on proximity to the garbage dump, had been agitating under the banner of Chandan Park Dushan Pratirodh Committee demanding its shifting for long. “The EBM chairman Mr Narendranath Tiwari has assured the CPDPC in writing that the municipality would not dump garbage at Chandan Park after six months,” said Mr Dulal Chaki, Opposition leader and CPI-M councillor from ward 25.

According to the EBM vice-chairman Mr Dulal Sarkar, the civic body has earmarked land at Nima Sarai under Kotwali gram panchayat in keeping with the government guidelines to set up a solid waste management project. Experts from Municipal Engineering Department (MED) in Malda are working on the site to implement the project, he added. “We have informed the government about the land for solid waste management. The project would be set up with matching grants from the Centre and State government. We hope to clear the dumping ground at Chandan Park in three months,” the vice-chairman, said.

The EBM would also distribute two containers of different colours for storing two types of garbage from April. EBM workers would collect garbage from households regularly, he added.

The EBM would send a staff from the conservancy department tomorrow to survey Chandan Park for clearing excess garbage which has affected normal life of the locals.
