Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb 4: Five tableaus broadcasting some of the district's most major social problems will be carried across Malda alongside the inaugural torch rally of the 26th state level primary children sports meet 2009, Malda.
Malda district magistrate, Mr Sridhar Ghosh, requested that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna be mentioned on the tableaus. Besides the NREGA and RSBY, district authorities will use the tableaus to raise awareness on the issues of drop-outs, malnutrition, sanitation and child marriage in the district. Literacy programmes will also receive mention.

26 athletes from each team will take part in the torch rally. The rally will commence on 9 February from five separate points in Malda and move across the district, in preparation for the official inauguration of the sports meet on 12 February.

Rallies starting from Harishchandrapur, Ratua I and II block headquarters will pass through North Malda, while a rally starting from Baishnabnagar in Kaliachak III will cover the southern part of the district, including three Kaliachak blocks and part of English Bazaar block. The rally passing through the north eastern areas will start its journey from Pakuahat in Bamongola block.

Athletes will spend the nights of 9 and 10 February in select areas around the district featuring folk cultural programmes such as Gambhira, Domni songs and human puppet dances from Malda, and Kabi Gaan from Murshidabad. Sports such as Kabadi and Kho Kho will be used to raise local awareness of the district's social problems. On the evening of 11 February a total of 130 runners will converge in English Bazaar town from different points in the district to join a cultural meet near New Circuit House.

Next morning, on 12 February, a combined torch rally will pass through English Bazaar town and reach the Malda district sports association ground just before the inauguration of the 26th primary children sports meet, 2009.
