One Bangla rustler shot dead in BSF firings


MALDA, Feb. 2: The BSF jawans today shot a Bangladeshi cattle rustler at Sirsi-Kaliabari border out post near Habibpur police station in Malda. The BSF jawans fired 35 rounds to disperse the group. One was killed in the firings while several others were injured.

The rustlers were trying to get back to Bangladesh with a herd of cattle at 4.15 a.m. when the BSF jawans spotted them and opened fire. The BSF could seize six buffaloes while one was killed in the firings.

While some of the rustlers managed to flee crossing the borders while other have taken shelter in the nearby village on the Indian side. The DIG, BSF, Malda sector, Mr PS Tomar, said: “The rustlers attacked the BSF jawans when challenged. The area is unfenced.”

The DIG added that the BSF and police have launched a joint operation to look for the rustlers hidden in Indian villages along the border. “We conducted a flag meeting with the Bangladesh Rifles and approached them to identify the person killed in the firing. The body has been sent for postmortem,” the DIG said.

According to the DIG, an injured Bangladeshi who was admitted to the Malda district hospital sustaining bullet injury in his thigh has admitted to cattle smuggling.

Lying on the hospital bed, injured Safikul said that he had joined the group yesterday and was asked to get hold of cattle from the Indian side. “I agreed to do the job for 200 taka,” Safikul, a resident of Bholahat in Bangladesh, said.

“An Indian trader told our team leader to supply cattle to a particular place in India,” he said.
