Shot in the arm for the 'Silk Capital'

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Feb. 12: Declaring Malda district as the “Silk Capital” for its 76 per cent contribution to production of silk cocoons in the state, the commissioner of textiles, West Bengal, Mr Manoj Path, today said the state government has adopted Textile Policy 2012 and Vision-2018 for the overall development of sericulture in the state.

Addressing the Resham Krishi Mela organised by the Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) at the Malda College auditorium, Mr Pant said: “We are preparing a ‘road map’ of silk-growing districts and the government has planned to increase production by 2012 and more development of its finished products and marketing by 2018. We have proposed to CSRTI to introduce a particular variety of cocoon considering the climate of the silk-growing districts.”

He noted the traditional culture of silk production in Malda and adjoining districts and the share of Malda district (76 per cent production) that helped West Bengal contribute 31 per cent to the overall production in the country, and expressed hope for better development.

Addressing the inauguration of the fair, CSRTI director Dr AK Bajpai recalled Malda’s contribution to the silk industry and assured that he would try his best to provide improved technology for the development of sericulture.

The minister for environment and state parliamentary affairs, Mr Sailen Sarkar, urged Dr Bajpai to look into the problem of farmers who depend on silkworm eggs from the Central Silk Board and ensure that disease-free eggs are distributed in the region.

Mr Sarkar also exhorted Mr Bajpai at the end of his speech to support the farmers in Kaliachak and provide facilities for the development of sericulture in the district, as was done in South India. (END)
