PHE to initiate water project

MALDA, Feb 2: The public health engineering (PHE) department is all set to inaugurate a new drinking water supply scheme on 5 February at Bhutni Diara Island, Uttar Chandipur gram panchayat, Manikchak block.

This is the first time the people of Bhutni Diara will get a supply of purified drinking water. Ten tube wells were completed a few months ago, at a cost of Rs 3.87 crore, but the department could not inaugurate the scheme due to the upcoming elections and the model code of conduct. The project had been conceived before 2006.

According to PHE officials, the water supply scheme will cover 2972.04 ha (four moujas) under Uttar Chandipur gram panchayat. A total of 44,384 people will get drinking water, a figure taking into account the estimated population growth until the year 2027.

The PHE project has installed an iron removal plant and chlorination unit. A total of 133 street taps have been set up to supply water at a per capita rate of 40 lt per day.

“At present the PHE will bear its operation and maintenance cost but finally it would be handed over to the gram panchayat,” said Mr Swapan Maitra, executive engineer PHE (arsenic division).

"At present, only Rs 2.56 will be required for the production of 1000 lt drinking water," he added.

The PHE chief engineer Mr SK Das has invited Mr Sailen Sarkar, the minister for environment and state parliamentary affairs, to inaugurate the project at Phari More (Zantu Pump House), Uttar Chandipur on 5 February.

Besides Mr Sarkar, attendees will include the minister of state for PHE, Mr Anwarul Hoque, the Malda MP Mr AH Khan Choudhury, and sabhadhipati Malda zilla parishad Mrs. Sabina Yeasmin and local MLA Mrs Asima Choudhury. n SNS
